What is Retin-A?

Retin-A is an acne treatment cream that contains the active ingredient tretinoin. Tretinoin is a derivative vitamin A, which is produced naturally by the body and is known to help neutralize harmful elements in our skin. Retin-A is also only topical treatment cream that helps to reduce wrinkles, as well as reducing the symptoms of acne, blackheads and whiteheads.

How does Retin-A work?

Retin-A cream works by increasing the cell turnover on the areas of the skin applied, hence extracting plugged dirt and materials that your body alone would not manage to remove. Retin-A also helps to stop new sebaceous skin material (also known as comedones) from forming.

How do I apply/use Retin-A?

Retin-A cream should be applied at night in a thin layer. In the morning you should wash your face with a facial scrub to help reduce any flaking. A moisturizer will also help to reduce any possible dryness/flaking. A common side effect of Retin-A is increased sensitivity to light, so a moisturizer that contains sunscreen is also advised.

When will I see the benefits of Retin-A?

Retin-A cream is a very effective cream for treating acne, whiteheads and blackheads; however it should be noted that this medication will not work overnight. It is recommended that you use the treatment for at least 6-9 weeks, by which time you should start to see a noticeable improvement.

What are the side effects of Retin-A?

Retin-A works by increasing the rate of skin cell turnover and for some people this make cause irritation and skin flaking. Other common side effects are:

* Tingling
* Redness
* Dryness
* Peeling

Retin-A treatment should be stopped and you should speak to your physician if you experience any of the following:

* Difficulty breathing
* Swelling of the face
* Any signs of an allergic reaction
